Preventing Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia: From Knowing to Doing
Objectives:
Discuss the significance of Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia (HAP).
Describe the etiology and risk factors for HAP.
Identify updated evidence-based HAP prevention every hospital can adopt.
Name the three (3) parts of implementation science that will move any evidence-based practice from knowing to doing.

Speaker Barbara Quinn, DNP, RN, ACNS,-BC, FCNS
Nurse Consultant
Dr. Barbara Quinn is a board-certified Adult Clinical Nursing Specialist and has been a Fellow of the National Association for Clinical Nurse Specialists since 2020. Dr. Quinn has 30 years of experience as a Registered Nurse, and 16 years of experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist using evidence-based practice and the science of process improvement to impact patient outcomes. While working in a variety of specialties within the acute care setting, Dr. Quinn returned to school for her Master’s in 2004 and earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2021.
Dr. Quinn recently retired from her role as Director of Professional Practice and Nursing Excellence for Sutter Health System for 24 hospitals. She continues to research, educate, and consult, emphasizing nurse-sensitive outcomes such as the prevention on Non-Ventilator Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia.
Dr. Quinn is actively involved in professional organizations including the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS), Association of Clinical Nurse Leaders (AONL), Association of California Nurse Leaders (ACNL), Sac-Sierra Chapter of Nurse Leaders (SSNL), and Association of Professionals in Infection Prevention (APIC). She is a frequent presenter at local, state, and national conferences and has authored several peer-reviewed publications, including her most recent publication pending print, “Ask the experts: Best practices in oral care.”
